LONDON - Sunshine and clearance sales boosted June's spending on the high street according to figures from the Office of National Statistics.

June's good weather helps lift high-street sales

The volume of retail sales in June was 2.9% higher than in June 2008.

Total sales volume in the three months to June was 1.3% higher than the same period a year ago.

Sales volume for predominantly food stores increased by 0.9%. Predominantly non-food stores increased by 0.7%.

The largest decrease was in household goods stores at 6.2%, which has now had 12 consecutive periods of falling sales. Non-store retailing and repair increased by 9.4%.

Sales volume in the three months April to June 2009 increased by 0.7% when compared to the previous three months.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said June's retail sales were boosted by sunshine, promotions and discounts.

But the wholesale turnaround in consumer confidence retailers are looking for ‘remains elusive'.

The good weather heatwave helped food retailers and boosted clothing and footwear sales, which further benefited from early clearance sales coinciding with good weather. Outdoor goods, such as garden furniture, pools and picnicware, were also helped by the sunshine.
