Like-for-like retail sales drop during May

LONDON - The British Retail Consortium said like-for-like UK retail sales fell 0.8% but increased 0.8% in total during May compared to the year earlier period.

Like-for-like retail sales drop during May

The BRC has said total sales increased during May because of good weather but food sales slowed after a positive Easter period. In other sectors clothing and footwear sales declined during May, but non-food non-store sales (internet, mail order and phone sales) increased by 7.6%, reflecting the slow down in store sales.

Stephen Robertson, director general at the British Retail Consortium, said: ‘Negative results show spring has been extremely difficult for most non-food retailers. The turnaround in sales of big-ticket items such as furniture and large electricals, which would indicate real change in the mood of customers, still eludes us.'
