Walk the Plank, who also produced the opening event for European Capital of Culture 2008 in Liverpool, will create a large-scale event on the banks and water of the River Aurajoki in Turku, Finland.
It is set to combine aerial performance, massed choirs, an original score, fire, pyrotechnics, and special effects to fit in with the show's theme of communication, which has been inspired by the city's current position as a telecommunications hub.
To ensure the event is inclusive and leaves a lasting impression on Turku 2000 local people will help create the show.
Walk the Plank co-founder and show producer John Wassell said: "The opportunity to work with the people of Turku to create an opening event that makes use of the fantastic riverside locations of the city is one which excites us greatly. It's a welcome sign that UK outdoor event companies really can compete with our European counterparts."
Turku will be the European Capital of Culture in 2011 together with Tallinn.
The Capital of Culture programme is the EU's most significant cultural initiative, which attracts significant international attention.
