Taking place on 20 June, the parade will be created by more than 60 local youth, environmental, special interest and charity groups as well as hundreds of musicians, drummers and dancers in response to the theme Out of This World.

Large mythical creatures are expected to roam the streets alongside giant robots and space men.

"There has been a huge enthusiasm from groups to participate in this first Manchester Day Parade, and we are creating costumes or floats with more than 1,000 participants," said Walk the Plank cofounder Liz Pugh.

"Manchester Day Parade is a new flagship event that is a very welcome addition to Manchester's thriving events programme. It's a fantastic opportunity for groups all over Manchester to work with the internationally acclaimed Walk the Plank and judging by the impressive creative ideas that are currently being brought to life, the city is fully embracing the occasion," said head of events at Manchester City Council Margaret Stephenson.
