The free CDs will be placed at till points in more than 1,200 supermarkets nationwide and will allow customers to sign up to any one of 's three internet packages –- Pay as You Go, 24seven or Broadband -- in the year-long promotion, supported by in-store and point of sale promotions.
The deal follows a similar agreement Virgin.net signed with Safeway, which began in January this year in an attempt to broaden the ISP's reach. Virgin.net is the UK's fifth-largest ISP, claiming about 600,000 subscribers, 10% of whom are signed up to its broadband services.
Peter Tuomey, Virgin.net sales and marketing director, said: "Home internet access is now truly mass market with 13m UK homes online. About 2m of these are likely to switch from their current internet provider during 2004 and a further 1.5 homes will come online for the first time this year. That's a sizeable market opportunity and this retail agreement with Somerfield and Kwik Save is a key part of ensuring we continue to take a sizeable share of the growth."
