Virgin expands its female web offer

LONDON - Virgin Media is to merge its female-focused Siren portal with its LivingTV website as part of a plan to create one of the country’s top five women’s websites.

The combined site, where content from Siren will be folded into the LivingTV.co.uk portal, will be accessible via the main Virginmedia.com website.

The revamped Living TV site will launch in April and include additional video content. Current content includes short, exclusive web films, called webisodes, around hit US show Ghost Whisperer.

Phil Townend, head of advertising at Virgin Media, said Virgin would look to strike deals with content providers for new content to enhance the site as a lifestyle offering. He said the firm wanted to encourage Virgin Media’s 5.5 million female unique online users to explore other content areas.

The company hopes the site will become a key destination for female web users and will eventually rival leading women’s sites such as Handbag.com.

Ads for the site will focus on a handful of specific areas of interest based around key TV shows, including Most Haunted, America’s Next Top Model and CSI: Miami.

Clients will be offered opportunities to buy around specific concepts, via editorial content, as well as roll ads, banners and idents.
