Kronfeld, who has been with Universal since 1991, will be responsible for developing global marketing strategies for the company's global artists, who include Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

He will report to Max Hole, chief operating officer of Universal Music Group International, and be based between London and New York.

Kronfeld also has responsibility for Cooperative Music, Universal’s alternative international licensing organisation, and for the development of rock label Spinefarm.

Kronfeld was formerly executive vice president, international marketing, at Universal Music Group, which did not cover North America.

Lucian Grainge, UMG chairman and chief executive, said: "Today's music and entertainment business is simply a worldwide environment. Talent and technology crosses borders with greater reach and speed than ever.

"Andrew’s appointment is another important step in the alignment of our operations into global responsibilities and there is no one better to lead this evolution in our marketing firepower."
