Each comedian will share their passion for their comedy decade and show a personal and idiosyncratic choice of clips to back up their argument.
The comedy series launches February 28 and will run monthly specials focusing on each comedian, giving each a chance to persuade viewers to get online and vote at .
Further clips-based shows will showcase Britain's favourite comedy moments, from 'Hancock's Half Hour' and 'Harry Hill's TV Burp', to Simon Pegg's 'Spaced', 'Spitting Image' and 'Spike Milligan's Q'.
Jane Rogerson, acting head of commissioning at UKTV, said: "British programmes are the absolute champions of comedy throughout the world. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the viewer to see a whole range of comedy in one definitive guide to the funniest times in recent British life."
BBC Entertainment will produce 'When Were We Funniest?' with Caroline Wright as executive producer.
Wright said: "With the BBC being home to some of the best British comedy, this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase something this country does really well.
"Talking about comedy seems to fire everyone up -- the debates have already begun and we haven't got a frame in the can yet."
The show will be hosted by comedian Alexander Armstrong.
