Uefa selects agency for Euro 2008 work

LONDON - Uefa, European football's governing body, has appointed direct marketing and retail agency The Marketing Store as its preferred merchandise supplier for the 2008 European Football Championship.

The agency, which picked up the account following a competitive pitch, will create an online catalogue from which sponsors can pick generic Euro 2008 promotional merchandise to offer consumers.

Euro 2008 will be jointly hosted by Austria and Switzerland. The 2004 event, which was held in Portugal, had more than 7.9bn viewings worldwide, with the final attracting a global TV audience of 279m.

In November, Uefa named Castrol as the tournament's final official sponsor. The event's other sponsors are Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Continental, Hyundai-Kia, JVC, MasterCard, McDonald's and Adidas.

Separately, Uefa has appointed sports and events marketing agency IMG to act as its worldwide sales agent of corporate hospitality for the tournament. IMG won a pitch involving 20 agencies that began last August.
