UBM re-enters research with $27m Light Reading acquistion

LONDON - United Business Media has bought online research, publishing and events company Light Reading for $27m (£15m), just months after it sold its research arm NOP World.

Four months after selling NOP World to German research company GfK for £383m, UBM has re-entered the market with online telecommunications research and publishing company Light Reading.

This includes heavyreading.com, a market research repository offering quantitative analysis and reports on telecommunications technology.

The company will operate under UBM's CMP Media division.

Established in February 2000, Light Reading had revenues of $10.1m in 2004. The company has offices in New York, San Francisco and London.

Light Reading's websites attract a global audience of more than 400,000, as well as an active customer base of 370 companies.

In addition, UBM acquired US chemical events business Informex for $24m and electronic business media company TechOnLine for $5.5m.

David Levin, chief executive of UBM, said: "These acquisitions will strengthen UBM in three industry verticals within which we have a significant presence. Each acquisition will deepen and enrich the offering we are able to provide for our customers."
