Twitter attracts more visitors than MSN Search

LONDON - Twitter is continuing its phenomenal surge in popularity, accounting for more UK internet traffic than MSN UK Search.

According to the latest Hitwise data, entered the top 50 UK sites in early April, becoming the fifth most popular social network.

Twitter also received more traffic than UK Search, , and all retail sites, with the exception of eBay, Amazon, Argos and Play.com.

During March, Twitter's largest source of UK internet traffic came from Facebook, accounting for 18.2 per cent of its traffic.

Although Twitter generates traffic to other websites, ecommerce sites have failed to capitalise on the potential source of visitors, garnering only 4.7 per cent of Twitter referrals.

In March, Twitter was the 36th biggest traffic source to other websites.

Meanwhile, eMarketer estimates 39 per cent of UK internet users will visit social networks at least once a month in 2009, growing to 50 per cent of users by 2013.
