TV Choice overtakes What's on TV in listings battle

LONDON - H Bauer's TV Choice has become the most popular TV listings magazine after overtaking IPC's What's on TV, which saw its sales fall 2.5% during the six months to December 2007, according to the latest ABC figures.

TV Choice, which sells for 38p, compared to What's on TV's 45p cover price, reported a 0.9% rise in circulation over the period to 1,404,950 copies, while its year-on-year circulation rose by 3.8%.

What's on TV fell from its top spot with a 2.5% period-on-period decrease. Its circulation stands at 1,386,900 copies. The IPC-owned title is also down 3.5% year on year.

BBC Magazines' Radio Times stepped up its performance in the second half of last year after a poor start in the first six months. Its circulation climbed 0.7% to 1,054,184 copies during the period, but its year-on-year circulation is down by 2.6%.

IPC title TV Times held on to fourth spot with a 1.6% boost in sales during the second half of last year to 358,511 copies. However, the magazine's year-on-year circulation is down by 5.0%.

IPC's TV Easy suffered the biggest fall period on period, as it fell 10.6% to 254,669 copies during the six months to December 2007. Its year-on-year figure is down by 13.2%.

Circulation of the Bauer-owned TV Quick dropped by 5.9% during the period to 211,608 copies, while its year-on-year figure fell by 14%.

Hachette Filipacchi's Inside Soap continued to rise in circulation in the six months to December and overtook IPC's TV & Satellite Week to claim seventh position. Inside Soap saw its sales rise by 0.6% period on period to 200,045, while its year-on-year figure is up by 5.7%.

Sales of TV & Satellite Week continued to decline in the second half of last year, dropping 3.1% to 195,368 copies. Its year-on-year circulation is down by 5.8%.

Bauer's Total TV Guide again rose in popularity as its circulation climbed 2.9% to 115,819 copies. Its year-on-year figure is up by 5.8%.

IPC's Soaplife failed to capitalise on gains it made during the first half of the year and fell 6.4% to 102,452 copies. However, its year-on-year circulation is up by 5.0%.

Hachette's other title, All About Soap, reported the biggest leap in circulation during the period -- its sales rose by 14.2% to 100,048 copies, driving its year-on-year figure up by a massive 28.2%.
