Top of the Pops goes al fresco in hour-long live special

LONDON - BBC One's 'Top of the Pops' is to make history by performing its first ever live outside broadcast in an extended hour-long show this Friday.

'Top of the Pops: Alfresco' will go out from Baltic Square in Gateshead Quays against the backdrop of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Performers on Friday include Will Young, Busted, Jamelia, Sugababes, The Streets and Girls Aloud.

The show will be presented by Tim Kash, Reggie Yates and Fearne Cotton and will go out live from 7pm on BBC One.

'Top of the Pops' launched in 1964 from a converted church in Manchester and was commissioned for just six shows. Since then, there have been almost 2,000 editions of the show.

There have been other live moments in 'Top of the Pops' history, notably in 1993 when New Order performed their hit 'Regret', from their number one album 'Republic', on the set of 'Baywatch', with David Hasselhoff and the rest of the cast running around in the background.
