Barlow, who takes up his post on August 31, takes over from Angus Mackenzie, who has left to become editor-in-chief of US magazine Motor Trend. Currently BBC Top Gear magazine's editor-at-large, Barlow is also a long-running columnist on GQ magazine and an editorial consultant at contract publishing house Cedar Communications.
Terri Westlake, Emap's publishing director for modern motoring, said: "We had a huge influx of superb candidates for the post, and it was a tough call to come to a decision. However, Jason stood out with his deep industry knowledge, brilliant magazine craft skills and crucially, his creative vision for the magazine."
Emap's Car experienced one of the biggest period-on-period gains in the last set of ABCs. It was up 6.2% to 114,381 and is up 7.9% year on year.
