The increase means that The Times will be the same price as its competitors, the Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent. The price of the Saturday Times will remain at £1.40.

News International is looking to increasingly focus on its subscription services to broaden overall circulation, with readers who pay upfront offered discounted prices.

The Times recently launched a free home delivery service that offered readers within the M25 the opportunity to have The Times and The Sunday Times delivered free every day before 7am.

The Times, which relaunched in full colour in June, recorded a circulation of 612,019 copy sales in July, a fall of 3.72% year on year.
