The retailer will begin selling electric guitars, keyboards and acoustic guitars in 28 of its Tesco Extra stores in the build-up to Christmas. The range will roll out to other stores if it proves successful.

A Tesco spokesman said it hopes to target ‘would-be rock stars' that enjoy Guitar Hero and want to try playing a real instrument.

Separately, the supermarket giant has launched a price war against Apple's iTunes by offering X Factor winner Joe McElderry's debut single, The Climb, on its website for 29p.

Tesco traditionally offers download singles for between 67p and 87p.
