LONDON - Tesco has announced strong sales in the third quarter of the financial year, boosted by 'improving customer confidence'.

Tesco sales up as it continues Christmas drive

In the 13 weeks ending 28 November group sales increased by 8.8% (excluding petrol). In the UK like-for-like sales for the quarter, excluding petrol and VAT-adjusted, increased by 2.8%.

said that customers had responded well to double Clubcard points, which was introduced in August and gives customers two points for every £1 they spend. The retailer is also sending out its February 2010 Clubcard statements, worth £67 million, in time for Christmas.

Terry Leahy, chief executive at Tesco said: ‘We are seeing improving customer confidence and encouraging trends in both the UK and our international businesses, although recessionary conditions still exist in a number of markets. As ever, with Christmas approaching, we're doing even more for customers with low prices, great promotions, including on our Finest range, and of course double Clubcard points. Our investment in growth - in new space and from the two acquisitions last year - is providing us with good momentum and a strong platform for the future.'
