Tesco has taken delivery of its last batch of 40 watt light bulbs, which will no longer be sold when stocks are depleted.

Three years ago, the then environment secretary Hilary Benn announced all incandescent light bulbs would be phased out by 2011.

Tesco expects the current stock to last "a couple of months". Sales of both the 60 watt and 100 watt bulbs have already been discontinued and replaced by efficient low-energy and Halogen bulbs.

All 60 watt candle bulbs will also be phased out with the current batch.

The only remaining traditional bulbs on sale will be the golf ball-sized 40 watt bulbs used in small lamps but they too will be phased out next year.

John Wheeler, Tesco merchandise planning manager, said: "Although some people are sad to see the old light bulbs go, they will be saving money with the new ones.

"The 80% energy saving light bulb is now much quicker than they used to be and are at full brightness within a few seconds, and 30% energy-saving light bulbs are at full brightness instantly.

"The changeover will save the country millions of pounds at a time when every penny counts."
