LONDON - B&Q has announced a number of initiatives to help customers make their homes greener.

B&Q introduces 'green army' to combat carbon emissions

The DIY and homeware retailer is introducing ‘green helpers' in stores to give customers advice on how they can make their homes greener. The eco-advisors will be rolled out to all stores throughout 2010 from January.

B&Q is also implementing Eco shop concepts within two of its stores by the end of 2009 and will roll the concept out to larger stores and online during 2010. The stores will first be introduced in Sutton and New Malden, providing a one-stop shop for eco home needs.

B&Q is also introducing a new eco brand in stores from March to make easy for consumers to identify products that will make their homes more energy efficient. The retailer has also announced that between 23 October and 26 October, it will pay the VAT on green goods so that customers obtain 15% off products including energy-saving light bulbs and draught excluders.

Euan Sutherland, chief executive at Kingfisher UK and B&Q said: ‘Today's announcement is all about making it easy and affordable for customers to green up their homes.  Sooner or later we are all going to have to make changes to our homes in line with the Government's Climate Change agenda and this may seem daunting for many of us to get our heads around.  Whether it's a straight forward loft insulation project or a more complex eco-renovation we will have the products, friendly advice and services our customers will need to eco-vate their homes in the most affordable way.'

The Government has set targets of a 30% reduction of carbon emissions by 2020 and 80% by 2050.

B&Q has recently signed up to the 10:10 climate change campaign in a pledge to cut its own carbon emissions by 10% during 2010.
