The recycling service was initially trialled by Tesco in 2006. The machines offered one point for every four pieces of metal, plastic and glass to be recycled.

Tesco said the service is being reduced to aluminium cans only, as it found customers were cutting up items such as plastic bottles to get more points. However it has increased the number of points available to one per can.

The automated recycling service was created following the succesful launch of Tesco’s intial Green ClubCard points initiative for people who used old bags to carry home shopping.
