Telegraph.co.uk attracted 27.7 million unique users in March with a busy news schedule that included extensive coverage of the run-up to the G20 Summit, more travel news and an increasing number of blogs.
In the fast-paced world of web traffic, it marks the first time the site has led the sector since April 2008.
Meanwhile, the website for News International's tabloid The Sun lost most of the six million unique users it gained in a Jade Goody-fuelled February, to post a 22% drop to 21.2 million.
The Guardian News & Media's site, Guardian.co.uk, which has led the pack for the majority of the last two years, saw a steady 3.5% monthly rise to take second spot with 26.2 million; still some way short of its own industry record of 29.8 million set in January.
Elsewhere, DMGT's MailOnline remained in third place following an 8.8% lift month on month to 23.7 million.
It was also a good month for The Independent’s website, up 7% to hit 10 million users for the second time this year. The Independent News & Media site also achieved the biggest year on year increase in the sector, with a 90% rise since last March.
In contrast to its quality rivals, The Times joined its tabloid cousin in falling month on month, albeit just 1.7% to 21.6 million.
Trinity Mirror-owned Mirror Group Digital, which includes Mirror.co.uk, continued its steady increase in unique users with a 2% lift to 7.1 million.
