Telegraph scores a first with travel deal

LONDON - In a first for the Telegraph Group, the publisher has signed a sponsorship deal that will see it publish a business travel supplement, which will appear in the Daily Telegraph as well as The Business and Business Traveller magazine.

It is the first time that the Telegraph Group has combined with outside titles to create a campaign for a sponsor.

It is also the first time that a full print-run insert organised by the Telegraph Group will appear in The Business since it took over the struggling Sunday newspaper's national advertising contract in the summer of 2001.

Last month, the Telegraph Group saw its plan to create a joint sales house with Trinity Mirror fall through after the Daily Mirror publisher walked out on the deal.

The plan would have seen ad sales for all of Trinity Mirror's national tabloid titles, which include the Daily Mirror, being transferred to the new sales house, which would be wholly owned by the Telegraph Group.

In all, the Apollo venture would have handled the national sales for eight titles: The Daily Telegraph; The Sunday Telegraph; Daily Mirror; Sunday Mirror; The People; The Daily Record; Sunday Mail; and The Business, the sales for which were taken on by the Telegraph Group last year.

The 24-page supplement has been sponsored by the hotel group Inter-Continental, which will also distribute 136,000 copies separately. The supplement will appear on the telegraph.co.uk website, supported by banner advertising and links to advertisers and the sponsor.

Chris White-Smith, display ad director at the Telegraph Group, said: "By combining the Daily Telegraph with two other titles, we are providing useful additional coverage and frequency of upscale audiences for the supplement and its sponsor and advertisers."

He added: "This is the first time we have brought an independent print title such as Business Traveller into a deal, but it won't be the last. I am confident that there will be other opportunities where we can demonstrate how Telegraph Group can innovate to keep adding value for our clients."

Business Traveller is part of the Euromoney Group.
