The campaign has been devised by London Creative to promote the new film from 'South Park' creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. 'Team America: World Police' is a satirical look at America's foreign policy and features scenes of the Thunderbirds-like marionettes having sex and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il singing a song called 'I'm So Lonely', as well as vast amounts of crude language.
The film also takes big swipes at the Hollywood liberal elite with Sean Penn and Michael Moore (as a suicide bomber) all coming under fire.
The film's distributor, United International Pictures, decided on radio as a better means of reaching the target market than press or direct marketing.
The idea behind the campaign stems from the convention of using clips from the film interspersed with voiceovers for radio ads. However, London Creative realised that very little on the 'Team America' soundtrack was likely to be cleared for broadcast.
So a series of rude ads was devised, which are being hosted on the website. People are being directed to the site via a conventional radio campaign explaining the ads were deemed "too offensive for commercial radio in the UK".
One of the ads starts out questioning the premise that 'Team America' is "the rudest film the planet has ever witnessed", but ends up proving that this claim is true with clips from the film.
A second ad claims that the film is the "ideal date movie", and ends with the claim that it is "a film so good you're guaranteed to get laid". And the third proclaims that the film takes political correctness "and shoves it up its sorry arse".
'Team America: World Police' is released in the UK today.
