The Royal Borough of Greenwich and Sail Training International signed an agreement for the regatta yesterday (7 May) at Greenwich Pier on board the Lady of Avenel, a former training ship which has strong links with Royal Greenwich.
The event will involve up to 50 tall ships from across the globe sailing down the River Thames. London last hosted the Tall Ships Race in 1989.
Councillor Chris Roberts, leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: "Royal Greenwich boasts the longest riverfront in London, making it the best place to host the tall ships regatta. This will be a fantastic opportunity to boost the economic potential of the borough even further, while providing a stunning visual display and opportunities for local young people to experience sailing on the high seas."
The occasion also marked the launch of the Royal Greenwich Festivals 2013, organised by the Royal Borough of Greenwich, which will include a new river strand to welcome the return of Sail Royal Greenwich from 1 September.
Sail Royal Greenwich will feature a fleet of tall ships, which will sail the Thames and offer visitors views of iconic maritime Greenwich.
Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, taking place on 21-29 June, and Greenwich Dances on 17 May to 27 June, will showcase a mix of music, dance and performance as part of the Royal Greenwich Festivals 2013.
