LONDON - Speech radio station TalkSport, is to launch a digital publication, TalkSport Magazine, in the summer.

The online-only publication, to be delivered to subscribers' inboxes once a week, is headed by James Mallinson, former publisher of Dennis's Monkey.

TalkSport currently draws in 2.5 million listeners a week and the new title is aimed at extending the radio brand online. The target audience for the station is aged between 20 and 40.

TalkSport is assigning a dedicated sales team to the magazine, led by Adam Bullock, TalkSport sales director.

A new editorial team has also been recruited to produce the title, with Bill Borrows, sports editor of Esquire magazine, taking up the position of editor on a freelance basis.

The existing TalkSport sponsorship and promotions team will handle any promotions for the magazine.

The title has been under construction for the past year, although Mallinson began work on the title in the first week of March.

He said there would be cross promotion of the magazine via the radio station.

"TalkSport will be the first radio station to have a magazine created off the back of it," he said.
Mallinson pointed out that while Bauer Radio predecessor Emap was successful in extending its publishing brands into radio, TalkSport should also be able to extend its brand beyond radio into online publishing.

"We are taking the brand values of the station and distilling them in a magazine format," he added.

Readers can either sign up for delivery of the magazine by e-mail or access it through the TalkSport homepage.

The product will be available in high definition to enhance the quality of its entertainment news pages, which will have video trailers embedded in them.

TalksSport sacked veteran presenter James Whale last Friday, after he broke Ofcom's impartiality rules by urging listeners to "vote Boris" during the recent London mayoral election.

The station is under investigation by the regulator over the incident on Whale's late-night talk show on 20 March.

Max Rushton is filling in on Whale's 10pm-1am Sunday to Thursday show while TalkSport seeks a replacement.
