The Sun turns to street sales to boost circulation

LONDON - News International is to sell copies of The Sun through street vendors, as part of its 20p cover price initiative in London.

The paper, which is currently on sale for 20p in London only, is to be sold at various pitches throughout the city during the morning rush, and from 11.30am until 2.30pm, when it will stop to allow thelondonpaper to be distributed.

The 100 vendors selling the papers will be branded with Sun logos and dressed in red.

A spokesperson for The Sun said there is no scheduled time limit for the new distribution, but a review will most-likely be carried out in two to three weeks time to examine the sale figures.

If the figures are positive, The Sun vendors could become a permanent fixture in the capital.

The move will anger newsagents who will lose out on revenue from sales of the UK's most popular newspaper.

A spokesperson from the National Federation of Retail Newsagents said: "News of this has only recently emerged and [we] are seeking a response from News International to find out more details of what is taking place.

"Understandably, until the situation is clarified, this news is likely to be met with considerable concern by regular newsagents who will be worried that their own sales of the Sun may be affected. We will now monitor this situation very closely."

This year the paper has been skirting close to the 3m circulation mark, with a low of 3,031,724 copies sold in March.

Dayna Slate, media manager at Carat, said: "This is a bold move from News International to bolster circulation, and whilst it increases visibility for the title, one has to question the publics' receptiveness to yet another newspaper vendor - free or paid for - taking over the London streets.

"Although The Sun aims to stop the street-vending before Thelondonpaper goes on distribution, it will be interesting to see the effect of this move on both the London freesheets and the Evening Standard."
