Associated titles outpace nationals market

LONDON - The Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday lead the market for July, with the two Associated Newspaper titles showing strong sales. The daily paper was up by more than 4%, while the Mail on Sunday, buoyed by its Prince CD promotion, rose by almost 2%.

The Daily Mail posted the largest increase in sales out of all national daily newspapers. Its circulation was up by 4.2% to 2,400,143 copies in July. However, its six-month average is down to 2.37% year on year to 2,330,505 copies.

Its mid-market rival the Daily Express also had a good month, with sales up 3.1% to 794,252 copies, but its six-month average is down by a large 8.1% to 768,321.

Pearson's Financial Times suffered the largest decline in sales among the national daily newspapers, falling 4.12% to 426,451 copies. However, six-month average is up 0.86% year on year to 447,557 copies and it remains the only quality paper to register positive sales.

The Independent recovered from its poor performance last month, recording a 0.77% rise to 240,116 copies in July. Its six-month average remains down by 2.17% year on year at 248,226.

News International's The Times also experienced a positive month, with sales up 0.28% to 635,653 copies. Its six-month average is down 4.13% year on year to 636,422 copies.

The Guardian failed to recover after June's poor performance, posting a 0.34% decrease in average net circulation to 362,309 in July. Its six-month average is down 3.35% to 365,712 copies.

The Daily Telegraph also suffered a slight decline, recording a 0.28% drop in sales to 889,289 copies, with its six-month average also marginally down to 894,391 copies, a drop of 0.64% year on year.

The total daily newspaper market consisted of 11,774,993 copies in July, which is a rise of 1.49%. The six-month average remained down at 11,625,826 copies -- a decrease of 3.31% year on year.

The Sun lead the red-top sector, posting an average daily circulation of 3,128,829 copies in July, which is a jump of 2.1% from June. However, its six-month average is still down 2.77% to 3,063,753 copies.

The Daily Star posted a strong performance, up 2.02% to 811,988 copies for the month of July. Its six-month average is only slightly down to 784,679 copies, a fall of 0.58%.

The Daily Mirror was only slightly down at 1,559,873 copies, a fall of 0.37% month on month. Its six-month average is down a considerable 5.54% to 1,554,120 copies.

The Independent on Sunday was the biggest faller in the quality market, with its month-on-month circulation down 12.03% to 216,371 copies in July. However, its six-month average figure rose 0.41% year on year to 230,673 copies in the period from February to July.

The Mail on Sunday was boosted by its free Prince CD giveaway, after the US singer signed an exclusive deal to allow the paper to distribute his new album.

The title's month on month circulation increased by 1.92% to 2,319,788 copies, while its six-month figure slipped by just 0.94% year on year to 2,283,285 copies.

The Sunday Express was up 3.58% month on month to 769,950 copies, but its six-month figure was down by 8.21% year on year to 766,126 copies.

The biggest selling quality Sunday paper, The Sunday Times, fell 0.42% month on month to 1,169,017 copies. Its six-month figure was down 8.99% to 1,211,686 copies.

The Sunday Telegraph, which normally sells around half the number of copies sold by The Sunday Times, saw its circulation decline by 2.42% month on month to 636,681 copies. Its six-month figure was down by a similar amount -- 2.55% year on year to 652,528 copies.

The Observer experienced a small slip of 1.39% month on month to 445,162 copies, while its six-month figure fell by 4.78% to 451,187 copies.

In the red-top sector, the biggest selling paper, the News of the World, was up 0.78% month on month to 3,294,832 copies, while its six-month figure declined by 6.07% year on year to 3,299,303 copies.

Its main rival, the Sunday Mirror, reported a month-on-month increase of 1.15% to 1,427,617 copies, while its six-month figure declined by 3.94% year on year to 1,395,149 copies.
