Success at centenary Chelsea Flower Show

Organisers of the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show have revealed its 100th event experienced faster ticket sales and an increased number of exhibitor applications than last year.

The five-day show took place between 21 and 25 May in the grounds of the Chelsea Royal Hospital. It attracted 550 exhibitors – more than double those at the first-ever show in 1913 - and 170,000 visitors.

Anita Foy, head of shows development, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, told Event: "We were extremely happy with this year’s event and pleased with the presentation of it. With it being in its centenary year, we were keen to showcase the RHS and Chelsea Flower Show."

Foy added: "We always have a sell-out event, and this year was no different, but what we did see was much faster ticket sales. We had to put a cap on the number of tickets we sold, but there were still some available towards the end of the event.

"We always look to match, if not improve on, our recycling targets year-on-year and this is has been one of our aims for 2013."

To celebrate the show’s centenary, Foy said much of the content within this year’s event was themed around celebrating 100 years of the Chelsea Flower Show.

"We had a number of centenary specials. We decorated the site with iconic images from the last 100 years, which included photos of royal visits. Many of the exhibits incorporated a centenary theme, and this year we crowned both a plant of the year and a plant of the century."

The Great Pavillion was supplied by De Boer Structures, using its Delta System structure, which showcased the work of top international nurseries.

Peter Spruce, managing director of De Boer Structures, said: "The Great Pavilion we designed for the Chelsea Flower Show’s millenium event was a dramatic improvement over the traditional canvas-style facility that had been used for decades.

"Crucially it has provided exhibitors with an environment that is far superior for the floral displays to be kept in pristine condition throughout the show, and allowing visitors clearer and easier viewing."

Sodexo, The Fine Foods Company and Creative Events provided catering for this year's Chelsea Flower Show, and Groundwork were tasked with recycling all waste created from the event.
