Street-Porter endures snake bites for nine celeb meals

LONDON - As she emerges as a possible winner, mouthy pundit Janet Street-Porter was bitten three times by snakes in the latest 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' bushtucker trial, winning nine out of the 10 meals, the best performance in the series so far.

The Independent on Sunday editor-at-large remained calm and collected as she put her hand in a snake pit, pushing the non-venomous snakes out of the way to collect the stars underneath.

"I know people say the snakes are not venomous, but when they bite you, it's not very nice," she said of her challenge.

Nightclub owner Fran Cosgrove managed just four stars on Sunday. He retired after claiming bugs were biting his groin. On Monday, former All Saints singer Natalie Appleton gained seven meals after walking a 200ft-high tightrope attached to a bamboo shopping trolley.

Viewers voted for former East 17 bad boy Brian Harvey to do tonight's challenge called "House of pies", which will more than likely involve eating vermin, bugs or fish eyes.

Harvey has been forming an unlikely bond with Street-Porter, who said last night she was collecting the meals for Harvey because he was hungry. Harvey is grieving after the death of his grandmother, who died the day before he entered the jungle and "tough" Street-Porter has been lending the singer a shoulder to cry on.

Street-Porter, who had her odds on winning slashed from 10/1 to 7/1 yesterday, will emerge as a strong contender for the crown after last night's challenge and showing a softer side to the public with her friendship with Brian.

According to reports, Street-Porter lashed out at a cameraman after he was following her for lengthy periods of time. If true, the incident should be shown on tonight's 9pm episode.

Elsewhere, the jungle-mates are convinced they are going to be joined by a couple of new celebrities because they have been building an extra large tree house and the producers have given them an extra large bed.

Harvey's girlfriend model Emma B was widely reported to be a stand-by contestant and ITV were said to be in last-minute talks with England footballer Paul Gascoigne after he pulled out of the show last week.
