I'm a Celeb camp already beset with tears and bickering

LONDON – Tempers and nerves are beginning to fray for the contestants taking part in ITV's 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!' after just one day, with one star threatening to quit and others already starting to squabble.

Former All Saint Natalie Appleton, the joint favourite going into the competition, was seen repeatedly breaking down in tears on last night's ITV1 show, claiming to be on the verge of quitting.

Appleton said on the show: "I'm not pretending I can't handle it. I've not slept for two days, I can't be super Nat -- I'm not. I'm going to go home."

Worse was to follow for Appleton when, during the show, she became the first celebrity to be selected by viewers to take part in a challenge, which will be screened tonight.

Last night's challenge, involving Fran Cosgrove, who was selected by his camp mates, involved the gossip page stalwart being drenched in insects, spiders and gunge.

Elsewhere in the camp, Janet Street Porter has already rubbed her fellow contestants up the wrong way, with the Independent on Sunday's editor-at-large clashing with former Royal butler Paul Burrell and ex-East 17 frontman Brian Harvey.

She accused Burrell of being brainwashed during his time as butler to Princess Diana and sniped at Harvey for smoking.

Other mutterings of discontent among the contestants included former Three Degree's singer Sheila Ferguson and Street-Porter complaining about Appleton waking the camp up after discovering a spider in her bed.

Meanwhile, Joe Pasquale, joint favourite with Appleton to win the competition with bookmakers Ladbrokes and outright favourite with William Hill, looks to be playing the same tactics as previous series winner Tony Blackburn, by remaining amiable and seeking to lighten the mood throughout the bickering.
