The design and build scheme started on site in January with the facility due to open in September next year. The new 36-metre link bridge will connect the new facilities to the existing ACC Liverpool, home to the BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena.

The linking of the existing event venues to the exhibition centre marks a milestone moment in the city’s journey to secure its future as a major international events destination and was carried out by construction services company ISG.

Designed by the project’s archictect, Denton Corker Marshall, and engineered by Booth King, the bridge will be clad in glass, creating a new landmark for Liverpool that both references the site’s industrial past and enhances the views across the UNESCO World Heritage site waterfront.

Alan McCarthy-Wyper, managing director of ISG’s construction business, said: "Whilst the bridge will not be handed over until the development is complete, the positioning of the steelwork marks a major milestone for this project.

"The bridge will form a physical and metaphorical link between Liverpool’s past and its future which will become a lasting landmark for the city."

Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, added: "The pedestrian bridge symbolises the next stage in the continuing success of ACC Liverpool as we join our existing building with an ambitious new facility. We are pleased with the progress made on site and the walkway signifies another step in this project to enhance Liverpool’s waterfront."
