Jones will be responsible for growing and building on the digital capabilities of Starcom MediaVest Group EMEA, the group’s biggest entity outside the US.

He moves from developing digital capabilities for the group Asia Pacific and will take on the development of search (SEM and SEO), mobile, social networks, portal partnerships, database marketing, affiliate marketing, analytics and digital content.

Based in London, he will work with the 26 SMG offices in EMEA and tap into 450 digital professionals.

Iain Jacob, chief executive of SMG EMEA, said: "Nic is the sort of top-end talent that SMG continues to attract. Having worked for the likes of Rupert Murdoch and Yahoo, he brings broad ranging and deep digital leadership to our region, that goes well beyond simple technical expertise.

"His understanding of digital and its role in the broader consumer and commercial environment is second to none."

From 2000 to 2003, Jones was chief executive of Yahoo in Australia and New Zealand. He then moved to News Corporation in Australia as managing director of News Interactive, establishing group digital operations.
