Standard drops top marketer as editor moves in

LONDON - The Evening Standard has made marketing director Jane Hayman redundant after just seven months with the newspaper.

Her departure follows the arrival of editor Veronica Wadley, who is believed

to want the marketing remit herself.

Hayman left the Standard's owner, Associated Newspapers, last week without a job to go to. She was previously marketing director at fashion retailer Bhs. She was hired with a brief to make the newspaper brand "integral to the lives of Londoners".

Wadley, who replaced Max Hastings earlier this month, is understood to favour a return to a promotions-led marketing strategy for the Standard and to believe there is no need for a full-time marketing chief. Bates UK handles the Standard's advertising account, with below-the-line work by sister agency 141. The Standard reported total sales of 402,223 for December 2001, a decline of 3.39% year on year.

Hayman was unavailable for comment as Marketing went to press.
