St John's goes door-to-door

LONDON - St John Ambulance is focusing its fundraising efforts on local door-to-door campaigns with a new campaign in Berkshire after finding a "significant amount" of its funding is being generated from face-to-face marketing.

The fundraisers are trained by specialist agency Wesser and will be asking people to set up direct debits rather then collecting cash donations. Anyone wishing to become a donor will be required to complete a form. They can decide how much they want to give and how frequently.

Information on the work of the charity will be available from the fundraisers, who will also be able to answer questions about volunteering and first aid training in the area.

"Our fundraisers are fully trained on the local work of the charity and also know which local events we will be involved with. People respond very well when they know their donations will be used to make a difference on their door step," said Murat Ismail, community fundraising manager at St John Ambulance.

"St John's is a community charity and this method of raising awareness and support works very well for us," he said.

The St John Ambulance Berkshire has around 500 volunteer members. "We see the support of local residents as being vital," said Berkshire fundraiser, Kim Adrian. "We depend heavily on private and corporate donations, as we receive no government funding."

The door-to-door approach is already used by the charity in 30 different counties around Britain and all the money raised will be put back in to the community it was generated from. St John Ambulance has been using this approach, alongside direct mail campaigns and events, for ten years.

All representatives are vetted and approved and St John's is encouraging people to ask for identification from fundraisers.
