Spike Lee teams up with Nokia for user-generated short film

NEW YORK - Nokia has signed Spike Lee to direct a short film in the US featuring YouTube-style videos shot by consumers on their mobile phones.

The film will have three acts, each ranging from three to five minutes long, with the theme loosely based on the concept of humanity, according to a report in The New York Times.

To contribute to the film, mobile phone users in the US need to upload their videos onto a bespoke Nokia website. Visitors to the site can then view the clips and vote for their favourite.

Lee will subsequently choose a winner for each of the three acts and then edit the winning clips into the final film.

Nokia decided to launch the promotion after it surveyed around 9,000 consumers and concluded that by 2012, one in four people will create, edit or share entertainment with friends instead of obtaining it from traditional media, according to the report.

Lee said: "I'm interested because it's a great collaborative effort. Within five years, new movies will be made with devices like these."

It's not the first time the politically focused director has entered into a commercial tie up with a phone company. back in 2003.
