Spam Sticks unveils TV ad on Facebook

Spam, the 70-year-old canned meat brand, is debuting the TV ad for its new product Spam Sticks exclusively to its Facebook fans this afternoon.

The 42,467 fans of have been invited to watch a preview of the ad for breaded Spam Sticks and the classic chopped pork and ham product at 3pm.

The ad has been created by Underground BLC. It features a Shakespearean actor taking a lunch break during the filming of a production of Hamlet and eyeing up a fellow actor's Spam Stick.

It uses the strapline "Tastes hammier than ham".

The ad will air on TV at the end of the year when the product goes on sale. Spam has not advertised on UK TV for seven years.

Spam intends to attract a wider and younger audience with the campaign and to position the product as ideal for meals in and out of the home.

The Facebook activity for the Hormel-owned retro brand has been devised by I Spy Marketing.

, in a bid to capitalise on its already sizable following on Facebook and Twitter, while aiming to attracting new and younger consumers.

It is now looking to add a recipe portal and Spam game to the page.

Spam was introduced to the UK in 1941 and became popular when food was rationed during the Second World War.

In more recent years it has received criticism from detractors who claim the product is made from poor quality processed meat.
