Spam became a big favourite in Britain when food was rationed during the Second World War.

The 70-year-old-canned meat brand is owned by Hormel Foods and was introduced to the UK in 1941.

Now Burger King, which has a heritage of trying to lure customers with novelty items, is to start selling Spam in the form of a miniature sandwich called the BK Shot.

It has previously launched a premium, £85 burger, as well as a "giant" burger.

The burger is to be launched initially in Japan. It will be marketed with the strapline "What women want, women get".

Burger King has not ruled out selling the BK Shot in UK, but said it had no current plans to do so.
