'Fringe', which is set to premiere in the UK on Sky1 this autumn, is a dramatic thriller that explores a blurring line between science fiction and reality.
Like 'Lost' it begins with a plane. The first episode begins as an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport with passengers and crew all having met grisly deaths.
It stars Australian actress Anna Torv who was most recently seen in BBC One hit drama 'Mistresses', and prior to that 'The Secret Life of Us'. She stars alongside Josh Jackson from 'Dawson's Creek' as well as John Noble who appeared in 'Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', Lance Reddick from 'Lost', Kirk Acevedo from 'Invincible' and Mark Valley from 'Boston Legal'.
Torv stars as FBI special agent Olivia Dunham who is called in to investigate the grisly plane. When the search nearly kills her partner, special agent John Scott (Valley), a desperate Dunham searches frantically for someone to help and she is led to scientific researcher Dr Walter Bishop (Noble).
However, Bishop has been institutionalized for the last 20 years and the only way to question him requires calling on his estranged son, Peter (Jackson), for help.
Under special agent Phillip Broyles (Reddick), the trio discovers that what happened on that fatal flight is only a small piece of a larger, "more shocking truth".
David Smyth, head of acquisitions at Sky1, said: "Together with 'Lost', we're honoured to be the home for J.J. Abrams' shows here in the UK"
'Fringe' is produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and is distributed globally by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.
Jeffrey Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. International Television, said: "JJ Abrams and his partners have created a compelling series that has been eagerly anticipated since its announcement, and we look forward to working closely with Sky1 to make 'Fringe' a hit with their audience."
JJ Abrams is the executive producer of the series, along with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The trio are the team behind the upcoming 'Star Trek' feature. Abrams was also behind 'Mission: Impossible 3' and the long running spy thriller 'Alias'.
