The series, acquired from Buena Vista International Television, features a cast including 'I Robot' star Bridget Moynahan and 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' star Campbell Scott. It will air in early 2007 first on ITV1 and later repeated on digital channel ITV2, making it the first US drama to be shown on ITV since it aired legal drama 'The Practice' in 1997.
The plot explores the idea that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through a chain of six people.
Jay Kandola, director of acquisitions for ITV, said: "My aim was to get brand-defining shows for the ITV Network. I am delighted that 'Six Degrees' will be a contemporary exciting new addition to the ITV1 and ITV2 offering."
Tom Toumazis, executive vice-president and managing director for Buena Vista International Television EMEA, said: "We are sure that the series' production pedigree and strong cast will appeal strongly to a UK audience."
ITV recently acquired the rights to 'Smith', a crime drama starring Goodfellas star Ray Liotta; 'The Black Donnellys', a US Irish organised crime drama; and 'Raines', a detective drama starring 'Jurassic Park' actor Jeff Goldblum.
Simon Shaps, head of television at ITV, indicated last month at ITV's investor conference that the channel would be much more focused on acquiring top US drama programmes to compete with commercial rivals Channel 4, which acquired 'Desperate Housewives', and Five, which broadcast recent US hits 'Prison Break' and 'House' starring Hugh Laurie.
ITV is yet to schedule a time slot for 'Six Degrees'.
