Sky Sports launches football gambling

LONDON - Sky Sports will launch the world's first interactive football television betting game this Sunday.

Sky Play will give viewers the chance to place bets via their remote control and digibox throughout the Premiership match between Leeds United and Chelsea. Football fans can win up to £3,000 for correctly predicting the outcome of key moments in the match, such as penalties and free kicks.

To play, viewers press a red button on their Sky remote control and a premium-rate call is made through their digibox and domestic phone line. The flat rate to enter Sky Play is £1.50 per game.

Viewers can gamble before the match, predicting the time of the first goal and name of the first scorer, and also make predictions throughout the match on referee decisions and penalty results. Each correct prediction scores points and, at the end of the match, the final score is submitted via the digibox to see whether the viewer can qualify for one of the cash prizes. First prize is £3,000 with 50 runners-up prizes of £50.

Vic Wakeling, managing director of Sky Sports, said, "There are so many smart computer games on the market these days, but this is new and completely different. There is a generation among our subscribers who will love it."

The gambling game is available to anyone who has a Sky Sports subscription and you can be any age to play. A spokesman for Sky Sports said, "I think the game appeals to all ages, eight to 80."
