
Customers also need to have the Sky+HD box, which includes an internet terminal. There are approximately 2.5 million of the boxes, which are the only version Sky is now offering customers, installed in UK households.
The new on-demand service will launch later this year and will be known as Sky Anytime+.
It will join existing service Sky Anytime, which offers customers with a Sky+ or Sky+HD box, a limited selection of programming from the past week.
While Sky Anytime is delivered via satellite, Sky Anytime+ is delivered over the internet and requires a Sky+HD box to be connected to a broadband router, either by a customer or by an engineer.
More than 1,000 hours of content from Sky's own channels Sky Arts, Sky Movies, Sky1 and Sky Sports, as well as other channels such as ESPN and National Geographic and up to 500 films, will be available at launch.
There is no extra charge for the content and no usage limit if customers are on the Sky Unlimited broadband package, which costs £5 per month or £7.50 per month with the Sky Talk phone service.
A 90-minute film would be available to watch in approximately one minute if downloaded on a connection faster than 2MB.
Sky also offers thousands of hours of content on its online service Sky Player.
