Sky debuts community features

LONDON - BSkyB is working with Pluck to introduce a range of social media tools, including blog and discussion boards across its portfolio of websites. The new features will be positioned under the new Sky Community platform.

Pluck is providing technology that will enable users to create and use a single profile across multiple Sky sites.

Sky Community product manager Maz Nadjm said traffic across the individual Sky sites has been increasing and the creation of social networking capabilities aims to "embrace the nicheness" of each site.

"The initial step is to allow people to participate with the content," said Nadjm. "The focus has not been on the technology itself but how we use it - what type of functionality we can provide that is good for the site and good for the audience."

Sky said the incorporation of social networking capabilities will help support greater audience engagement and provide improved levels of integration across the portal.

Skynews.com will be the first site to feature the new capabilities, including a user-generated citizen journalism section where users can share videos, photos and comments on breaking news.

The features will be rolled out across the Sky sites this Autumn.
