Shelter taps Big Brother hype with eviction campaign

LONDON - Shelter is capitalising on the 'Big Brother' phenomenon with an ad campaign highlighting the problem of eviction and homelessness, breaking just as the reality gameshow reaches its finale.

Shelter's campaign features the headline: "It's eviction night. You decide." It offers two potential evictees, Clare and Lisa, and, just like the television show, people can vote to stop their eviction. The ad was created by Blue Frog.

Although the "competition" between Lisa and Clare is fictional, people can text the number and a £1.50 donation will be made to the homeless charity.

Adam Sampson, director of Shelter, said: "Big Brother has put the word eviction into everyday conversation. But the truth is that real evictions are grim, traumatic and very distressing for those who see their homes ripped away from them."

Shelter says that 76,000 households in England were made homeless in the past year after being evicted -- an increase of nearly 8% on last year.

The Channel 4 series wraps up tonight with the four contestants in the running for the £70,000 prize -- Ray, Scott, Steph and Cameron -- all facing eviction. Cameron, the bible-toting virgin from Orkney, is the bookmaker's hot favourite to win.

The series has already spawned one media star in the form of the science-fiction bore Jon Tickle, who was voted back in to the Big Brother house three weeks after he was evicted.

Tickle has, however, said he plans to renounce the world of celebrity and return to his job as a data strategist, where he claims he earns £70,000 a year. He told the housemates that he would be back at work within three weeks.
