News of his departure comes on the heels of the appointment last month of Mike Gordon to the new role of commercial director, sitting between Trickett and Times Newspapers general manager Paul Hayes.
The move added another tier of management to the group, resulting in Trickett having to report to Gordon rather than directly to Hayes. The Times is expected to hire another ad director.
Trickett, who joined News Corporation-owned Times Newspapers in 1998, began his career as a sales executive at sister tabloid operation News Group Newspapers, which publishes The Sun and News of the World, in 1978.
He then spent 14 years at the Evening Standard, with a brief interval at the Racing Post, where he rose to classified ad director. After joining The Times, he was promoted to group ad director at Times Newspapers in 2000 from classified ad director.
Neither Trickett or Times Newspapers were available for comment at the time of writing.
Trickett's departure comes amid a flurry of activity among advertising directors in the broadsheet sector. Last week, Len Sanderson left the Telegraph Group, where he was managing director of sales, as part of a reorganisation of its senior management.
In June, the Financial Times lost its ad director Claire Payne to Associated Newspaper's Loot. Payne had taken over on the FT from David Walsh, who moved to a shortlived role as the FT's global ad director, a post that was later scrapped. He is now at The Business.
