RSPCA in row with SSPCA over donations

LONDON - The RSPCA and the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) are involved in a spat over donations.

The Scottish charity has accused the RSPCA of ‘stealing' funds from animal lovers in Scotland and has launched newspaper ads stating ‘The RSPCA can't rescue animals in Scotland but they do want your money'.

The RSPCA has rejected the claims, saying that it ‘goes to great lengths' to ensure its marketing activity does not reach Scottish audiences, or makes it clear that it is just registered in England and Wales.

However, the SSPCA has accused it of marketing itself in Scotland with ads on radio stations, and posting of advertising on Scottish newspaper websites and accepting donations from Scottish supporters.

While RSPCA ads may have run in Scotland, the RSPCA insists that it is because advertising is sometimes bundled up in UK-wide packages and it is technically difficult to limit web ads to England-only sites.

In Scotland, the RSPCA has no role or status, and animal welfare is handled by the SSPCA.
