Over the last week, football-focused Rivals.net attracted 28% of sports fans visiting the top 10 sites. Competing independent website Team Talk was not far behind, in second place with 19.1%.
The official Liverpool FC site came in third with 7.8%. It was also was the most popular of the team websites, with nearest team rival Tottenham Hotspur in 10th place.
RacingPost.co.uk, the online version of the UK's leading daily sport newspaper, was at number four with rival newspaper website SportingLife.co.uk at number five. Online bookie William Hill was the only gambling website in the top 10 in sixth place.
Chrysalis-owned Rivals.net is Europe's only network of independent sport sites and covers a wide range of sports including football, rugby, wrestling, athletics and Formula 1. It has just won the best portal award at the 2001 New Media Age Awards.
