MSN and Freeserve top <BR>news and media league

LONDON - MSN UK and Freeserve have topped the list of the UK's most popular news and media sites according to Hitwise, the internet traffic and research service.

The poll has revealed that net users are far more likely to turn to popular portals, such as MSN, for news rather than specialised websites.

The top two sites beat BBC Online and BBC News by a wide margin.

Number one site MSN attracted 44% of all the visitors to the top 10 news and media sites, while Freeserve drew in 38.5% of the net users.

BBC Online, in third place, was far behind Freeserve with 6%, while the most popular news site, BBC News, was in fourth place with 2.5%.

European portal Tiscali was in fifth place, only narrowly beaten by BBC News. Other news websites in the top 10 included ft.com at seven, Guardian Unlimited at nine, followed by the Telegraph website at 10.
