The Guardian site's traffic climbed 8.9% from July to 3,058,871 daily average browsers, in a month dominated by the riots in London that then spread to other major cities.

A new record of 5.68 million daily browsers visited the site on Tuesday 9 August, the day after the worst of the trouble, according to a Guardian News & Media spokesperson.

The previous record of 4.56 million occurred in April after the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Other broadsheet sites experienced similar surges, but the rest of the market less so.

Telegraph.co.uk was up 9.4% to 2,149,989 daily average browsers, while Independent.co.uk was up 6.8% to 664,685.

Despite MailOnline's traffic growth lagging at 3.9%, it was still enough to take it to a record daily average browser figure of 4,404,242, the highest of any UK online newspaper.

Mirror Group Digital proved the exception this month, dropping 2.9% to 716,114.

According to the Guardian News & Media spokesperson, the Guardian mobile site attracted 399,000 average daily unique browsers in August, which was a 233% increase year on year.
