MailOnline reports return to growth

MailOnline returned to growth in May, registering an uplift of more than 20% in monthly browsers with more than 77 million users hitting the site, according to ABC data.

Today's figures from the ABC multiplatform report revealed a generally strong month for national newspaper websites. Big news stories in the month included the reporting of the death of Osama Bin Laden.

MailOnline reported a rise in monthly browsers to 77,250,993 last month, a 21.17% lift from April. This marked a return to growth after suffering a Its year-on-year increase was a staggering 82.32% and it remains the most popular newspaper website in the country.

Figures from comScore, also released today, revealed MailOnline had narrowly failed to overtake The New York Times as the most viewed news site globally.

In an industry first, MailOnline also today revealed that 62,000 unique browser a day access MailOnline via its iPhone app, which it launched six months ago.

The figures will make positive reading for executives at the Mail as it gears up for a major push in the US.

The MailOnline's average daily browser number was 4,365,716, up 21.4% on the month.

Elsewhere, the battle for digital eyeballs continues apace. Guardian.co.uk reported a monthly browser figure of 51,383,937. 

There was no monthly browser comparison figure for Guardian.co.uk, as last month it opted to withdraw its average monthly figure from the official audit for the first time since records began. Guardian.co.uk reported an average daily browser number of 2,827,677.

Both Guardian.co.uk and MailOnline continue to hold a considerable advantage over their rivals.  

Telegraph.co.uk posted a 14.05% increase in monthly browsers to 43,796,963, cementing its position as the third-most-popular news site in the UK. Its average daily browser figure came in at 2,188,745 for the month.

Independent.co.uk and Mirror.co.uk continue to fight a closely contested battle for monthly browsers, with the latter holding a current advantage.

Mirror.co.uk reported a total monthly user figure of 15,766,729, ahead of Independent.co.uk with 15,225,779.
