Ricky Gervais to write an episode of The Office for US fans

LOS ANGELES – Comedian Ricky Gervais is to pen an episode of the US version of his hit show 'The Office'.

Gervais and his co-writer Stephen Merchant will write one of the episodes of the new third series, a spokesman for Gervais has confirmed.

The US version sees 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' star Steve Carell reprising the David Brent role.

Although the first series of the Stateside version of the show was not an instant hit, it has turned into a slow-burner success.

However, US network NBC went ahead and commissioned a second series, which attracted over 10m viewers and is fast attaining cult status in the US.

Gervais is also working on a second series of BBC Two hit 'Extras' and is touting Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Madonna to star in the series as twisted versions of themselves.

In addition, Gervais recently wrote and starred in an episode of 'The Simpsons'. He played a David Brent-type character, who moved in to the Simpson household to live with Marge during an episode of 'Wife Swap', while Homer went to life with his wife.

Simpsons' creator Matt Groening was so impressed by Gervais' episode he said: "He should be a regular character. In fact, he should have his own cartoon series."
